Funerals
‘Is it not strange, that a sheep's guts should hale the souls out of men's bodies?’ (Much Ado About Nothing - W. Shakespeare)
This is as true now as it was in Shakespeare's day. Whether echoing the emotion of a sad occasion or celebrating the life of a lost loved one, no instrument in history has been found to be more effective than the pipes.
A solitary piper in the distance can be more emotive than words can describe. There is no more fitting tribute to the memory of a deceased than the playing of a classic, or perhaps, favourite tune, hymn or lament. Amazing Grace, Flowers of the Forest, The Dark Isle, Lord Lovat's Lament or the Skye Boat Song are a few of the more traditional airs.
A piper leading the funeral cortege sets an appropriate tone for the sombre occasion, as does the traditional Highland music played at the graveside. Whether at the church, graveyard or crematorium, the pipes will invariably provide a reflective moment.
Whilst not overlooking the feelings of sadness or mourning on such occasions, it is often appropriate to recall the joys in the life of the deceased during the wake or reception. This celebration of life can be accented by the addition of uplifting and merry music on the pipes, which may be right for the moment.
